Sharing: "The Magic of Toastmasters"

Testimonial by President's Distinguished Area 2007-2008 Award Winner, Area S6 leaded by Immediate Past Area Governor, Christopher Choong, CC, CL.

July 1st 2007 may be an ordinary Sunday for most families, waking up in the morning, going out for breakfast and spending a good family day together.

For me, this day marked the day I started to spread my wings wide open at a span of 6 feet across. As I began to flip it faster and increased the frequency, I realized my legs were no longer touching the ground – It was a lift off ! Just like the golden eagle of District 51, this day has marked a day for me to fly high and serve the community of the Toastmasters.

All in a sudden, my inbox was flooded with enquiries, requests, suggestions and lots of action items to follow up. I was scared and nervous at the same time. New terms and phases sounded so complicated such as “Area Governor’s visit”, “Area Governor’s report” and “DCP report & goals”. The experience was like a different Toastmasters program compare to what I knew about Toastmasters. Then later I realized, this was part of Toastmaster’s leadership program.
It’s an opportunity of wider learning experience and not many companies or college can provide this learning - “Learning on the fly”

Just the other day, I was observing my nephew enjoying his coloring session with some crayons. I then realized there were some colors used almost to the end but there were some colors doesn’t show any sign of usage. But they were placed together to make a complete box of crayon.

This analogy is quite similar to our Toastmasters club. Some of the members were very bright and actively participating in every session and event. While some members chose the slower learning pace. Some are just guests that visits and still weighing to decide whether to join the club or not. But at the end of the day, what made it unique was all these members joined up to have a common goal – to have a fun learning experience.

I have witnessed many events and programs whether it is a club, area or division level. They always have lots of hurdles and problems before the event date. But comes to the last 2 hours before the event, things will always fall into the right place and the members will ignite to work together and make the event successful. I call this the “Magic of Toastmasters“. This magic has helped everyone including myself to be strong to SOAR high in the sky. With the courage to conquer our fear and limit and resulted us to be the President’s Distinguished Area for 2007/2008. Last but not least, these 12 months was indeed one of my most memorable flight and surely we wouldn’t fly high if wouldn’t be a team of Simply Amazing people supporting and motivating each other.

I would like to thank all the Club Officers of the SEVEN clubs in Area S6 for their great leadership and the members of Area S6 for supporting and making the Magic of Toastmasters a reality. I would like to thank the District and Division officers for guiding and supporting the AGs when we were lost, show us the way and share without boundaries.

Once again, thank you for making the Magic of Toastmasters
a reality.

Area Governor Club Visit Sharing #4

Fellow Toastmasters,

This is my club visit sharing from Area S7.
I learned some good practices from the club and shared our practices to them.
Should you find any of the practices useful to your club, just implement it!

Club: Vista Penang Toastmasters Club
Venue: Mayang Mall, Bayan Baru
Date: 7-Oct-2008 7PM

A) Meeting setup:
1) Good U-Shape layout, each member can see stage clearly
2) Guests name display on board, this will make guests felt welcome in new environment and existing members can pronounce their names correctly
3) Perhaps Role Players Name Tag can be displayed on the desk, good practice to let everyone know who is doing what

B) Program agenda:
1) Toastmasters-Of-The-Evening (TOE)
a) She started the meeting with roll call. The roll call is very creative. She asked members to introduce themselves and give view point on what friendship means to them. This is good practice to warm up the meeting atmosphere.
b) Perhaps she can add-on to explain each role player purpose. This will help new members understand what each session can benefit them.
c) Besides leading the meeting agenda, another important role for TOE is make sure meeting start and end on time, she make this happened.

3) Table Topics Session
a) Table Topics Master explained purpose of TT session and time allocation. This is good approach to help new members and guests to follow the program easily
b) Table Topics session is very creative. Good variety and mixture of easy and tough topics. Good practice as different level of participation can adopt. Members enjoy the fun while learning.

4) Timer
a) Good tracking of time alert to speaker in both Table Topics and prepared speech sessions
b) Perhaps he can comment if overall Table Topics Speakers are within or out of time allocation

5) Grammarian
a) Able to detect grammatical error and provide example of correction
b) Able to catch good phrases used
c) Also comment on use of Word of the Day
This is the best Grammarian I met before.

6) Ah Counter
a) Able to catch filler words like “ah” and “err”.
b) Suggest Ah Counter to sum up all filler words to help speaker easily understand how many total filler words used

7) Speech Evaluation
Prepared Speech receiving proper evaluation -> Speech Evaluator explain well on evaluation, which part is good, quote the speech part and explain why that part is important in speech delivery.

C) Other practices observed:
1) "The Best Table Topics" Ribbon presented by members voting. Good encouragement on Table Topics participation.
2) The club may consider providing some refreshment or drinking water. This will enable people focus on meeting.
3) Suggest the club to assign Silent Evaluator for Role Players.
4) Invite comment for meeting improvement from the new members. Good approach to include new member’s needs.

Overall rating by Area Governor: "Exceptional Meeting" rating.

Below are some photos taken during the visit.

Toastmasters 2nd Quarter started!

It is been a quarter since we installed in office, being as either District Officers or Club Officers.
It’s time to pause a while to review our plan and strategize how to proceed in second quarter.

I suggest you to do this:-
1) Read Toastmasters mission, vision & values once. This will help you refresh what you are busy doing are they still align with our initial purpose and mission

2) Then review your Club Success Plan progression. Your club should be at least at about 25% progression. Congratulations if you have achieved it! In case, your club still far behind, call your Club Executive Meeting to discuss your challenges and revise the plan accordingly.

3) Call your Area Governor should you need any assistance.
